چکیده

Experimental results from Haverah Park, Yakutsk, AGASA and Fly’s Eye are reviewed. All these experiments work in the energy range above 10 eV. The ’dip’ structure around 10 eV in the energy spectrum is well established by all the experiments, though the exact position differs slightly. Fly’s Eye and Yakutsk results on the chemical composition indicate that the cosmic rays are getting lighter over the energy range from 10 eV to 10 eV, but the exact fraction is hadronic interaction model dependent, as indicated by the AGASA analysis. The arrival directions of cosmic rays are largely isotropic, but interesting features may be starting to emerge. Most of the experimental results can best be explained with the scenario that an extragalactic component gradually takes over a galactic population as energy increases and cosmic rays at the highest energies are dominated by particles coming from extragalactic space. However, identification of the extragalactic sources has not yet been successful because of limited statistics and the resolution of the data. subject headings: cosmic rays: general

Rapporteur talk for Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays ( HE 1 . 3 , 1 . 4 , 1 . 5 ) : Messengers of the Extreme Universe

In this report I summarize contributions on the highest energy cosmic rays to the 28th International Cosmic Ray Conference in Tsukuba, Japan, Sections HE 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 involved over 80 oral presentations and about 120 posters. This large body of work attests to the vitality of a field committed to resolving the mystery of the origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. These cosmic rays with en...

Centaurus A, the cosmic ray accelerator a few Mpc away from us is possibly one of the nearest sources of extremely high energy cosmic rays. We investigate whether the gamma ray data currently available from Centaurus A in the GeV-TeV energy band can be explained with only proton proton interactions. We show that for a single power law proton spectrum, mechanisms of γ-ray production other than p...

A study on the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in extensive air showers

The dependence of the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in simulated extensive air showers to the energy and the mass of the primary cosmic rays has been studied. It has been shown that a previous claim about mass independent proportionality of shower energy to the total Cherenkov photon number is not valid in energies below EEAS ~ 1014 eV. We have found that the core distance of the so c...

Effect of the 3K background radiation on ultrahigh energy cosmic rays

In this work we re-examine the opacity of the cosmic background radiation to the propagation of extremely high energy cosmic rays. We use the continuous energy loss approximation to provide spectral modification factors for several hypothesized cosmic ray sources. Earlier problems with this approximation are resolved including the effects of resonances other than the ∆. PACS numbers: 96.40,13.8...
